Tis the Season for Thieves
Tuesday, December 9, 2008I blogged recently about my mom’s bag being snatched by an asshole on a motorbike, and just when you think things are ok, my boyfriend’s wallet gets stolen while he was on his way home. All this happened within a span of 5 fucking days. What’s the matter, Makati? Where the hell are the police when you need them? All of a sudden I don’t feel so safe here anymore.
Here are some tips for all you travellers of the night to avoid or at least minimize the incidence of such situations:
- Make sure all your important items are buried deep inside the recesses of your bag. Not in any outer pockets, but deep inside where no slimy arms could penetrate (sounds dirty, but you get my drift)
- When travelling, use a bag that isn’t easily grabbed by some asshole on a motorbike. A shoulder bag is fine, but when you’re walking around in the dangerous world outside, hug it tight to your side as if your life depends on it. You may look stupid but at least your stuff is secure.
- As much as possible, refrain from texting. Flashing your phone in the dark of the night is like a beacon of hope for all thieves worldwide.
- Do not listen to music while travelling. You are less alert about your surroundings if you have music blaring in your ears.
- If you are carrying large amounts of cash, divide them. Put some in your shoe. Some in your pockets. Some in your bag. It may look silly paying for a can of coke with cash coming from your sock, but it’s useful in cases when you get held up and/or your wallet gets stolen. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, as they say.
- If you are wearing fancy jewelry, take them off before commuting. I’m sure we all know of those incidents where thieves have no qualms about ripping necklaces and earrings from your body parts.
- BE AWARE. While walking or commuting, it is important to look around you for suspicious looking characters. You are less likely to be victimized if they see how alert you are about your surroundings.
If somehow you follow all these rules to a T and still get pickpocketed at the end of the day, be thankful that you are still alive. I’ve heard worse stories of people getting held up. It’s best that you give up those material things instead of risking your life trying to get them back from a thief with a gun/knife.
Please share anymore tips that you can think of. I’ve had a long day at work, and an even longer evening so I can’t think that straight for now.

He noticed his bag was open while walking to a bus station and saw that his wallet was missing. He reported the incident to the Makati Police Station and surprisingly, the cops were polite and accommodating. He was expecting them to give him a sermon (lol!)
Posted by sh3lly at December 11, 2008, 1:47 pmHaha, isn’t that what police always do on the news whenever something happens?
“Dapat kung naglalakad kayong nag-iisa sa gabi mag-ingat ka dahil blablabla yadda yadda yadda…”

Oh sheesh, I’m sorry to hear of what happened. -_-
Makati police sucks, really. All they care about is getting kotong by throwing around arbitrary traffic rules and regulations to unaware drivers.
Anyway, how did his wallet get stolen?
