Komikon 2008 Recap!

Saturday, December 6, 2008

So, yeah, this post has been long overdue. I might as well write about it now and get it over with.

The mandatory group shot before leaving. Wheeeere’s Shelly?

The Komikon this year seemed to be more crowded than the previous cons with lots more attendees as well as exhibitors/sellers. Whoever said that the local comics scene is dead is sorely mistaken. And, no, I do not want to consider Carlo J. Caparas as the man who brought back Philippine comics (It’s a long story)

From the con I bought myself the following comics:

  • Atomic Underground Issue 5 (my boyfriend’s indie comic)
  • Mangaholix issue 6
  • Nurse Macho Origins
  • Skyworld Apocrypha

I didn’t get to buy Budjette Tan’s Trese and I had no idea that Arnold Arre’s Martial Law Babies was being sold at the con. I only found out too late, days later in fact, when I went online and read about people buying Martial Law Babies at the Komikon. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll be able to catch them when they get distributed to the bookstores.

As for our SEKSI calendars, sales weren’t as high as last year’s during our launch but it was all right. There were some pretty awesome people who bought our calendars, namely Harvey Tolibao, Chester Ocampo, and Lisa Gokongwei-Cheng (yes, owner of Summit Media). So awesome, I tell ya!

However, there was this guy who, when approached and asked whether he would like a calendar, said that he didn’t want to buy it. Instead, he said that he’ll just give us his autograph, or better yet, his picture. Kei and I left him laughing to himself.

Now, I didn’t know who this guy was but a simple “No, thank you” would’ve sufficed. It’s one thing when people come up to ask you for your autograph and an entirely different matter altogether when you offer to give autographs to people who have no idea who the hell you are. It’s just dumb and downright annoying. I’m putting him on my blacklist. He will most definitely will not be invited to my parties (LOLZ).

Anyway, it’s great that more and more people are hopping onto the indie bandwagon. I hope that local comic artists continue to go forth and multiply in numbers and that more people would patronize our local comic scene. These people are brimming with talent and creativity. Other than always checking out the latest X-men installment, why not try and see what the locals are offering in the next cons? I promise you that you won’t be disappointed.

One of my favorite artworks on display at the con. This is a watercolor painting by Nestor Renondo.

I wanted to say “welcome back”, but when you said something like “always checking the latest x-men” I yeouched! Your words cut me deep!

What local comics can you recommend? I’m not very up-to-date about the local comic industry.

And LOL doncha want my autograph?! Nah, I’m kidding. That guy indeed has some confidence, I give him that. Misguided as it is. Who is he, anyway, to think that people want his autograph?

I wonder who this guy is too.. If I show you a picture.. would you recognize him? :D

Thanks for attending Komikon and we’re glad you enjoyed it! We’ll try to do what we can with the heat.. Alam mo naman.. hottest convention ang Komikon! LOL…

@Nightdreamer: There’s nothing wrong with X-men or other foreign comics for that matter but I just want to advocate local comics as well. I think alot of pinoys miss out on local comic goodness, you see, and local writers and artists need all the exposure and support they can get :)

Local comics I recommend would be Budjette Tan’s series “Trese” which is about a female investigator solving supernatural crimes in Metro Manila; Jamie Bautista’s series “Cast” which is a wonderfully written slice-of-life story about love and friendship with none of that cheesy crap that you see in telenovelas; Arnold Arre’s graphic novel “After Eden”…and let’s not forget the “Siglo” anthologies. Hmm, I think I’ll just write a post about all these hehe.

@Lei: He belongs to a certain art group and I googled it and came up with his name, but I won’t say it here. I’ll leave it as a blind item (LOL!) Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed it (in spite of the heat) and can’t wait for next year’s Komikon! :D

Okay, I’ll wait for such blog post then.

And am I the only one who thinks that Kei is drawing you?

Posted by Nightdreamer at December 8, 2008, 3:30 pm

Just to be sure.. It’s not Lyndon Gregorio, is it? :D

I *might* have an idea who that is… :P

Glad you enjoyed Komikon! :)

@Lei: Hehe nope, it isn’t Lyndon :D I should post more blind items like this. It’s fun. LOL!

@Nightdreamer: Eh? That drawing doesn’t look like me!

I’m cuter *ahem*

Haha!
